Remote Management

Global growth and the popularity of telecommuting have increased the frequency of remote management (where the boss is in a separate location than the employee or team). In some cases it can transcend continents and cultures. To effectively manage remotely, both the boss and the employee need to understand and accept the ground rules (preferably through a written policy). It is best to have documented objectives with periodic progress review.

A good boss ensures ample face-to-face meetings with remote employees or teams, especially when it involves different cultures.  This is primarily to establish a personal trusting relationship.  The most critical success factor in managing remotely is consistent, clear communications.
